The 3/5 Human Design Profile: Why Your Failures Make You More Credible

Article by Abigail Rebecca | Human Design Business Mentor

We have a lot of 3/5 Profiles in our community, including inside The Expansion Circle, and I absolutely adore them.

There's something I see happen with 3/5s again and again though, and it's a blind spot that blocks their visibility, holds back their success and stops them sharing themselves in the way they're actually designed to.

Before I dive in, one caveat. I'm speaking broadly about the 3/5 Profile here, and this applies whatever your Type. Human Design is the science of differentiation, so the way all of this lands for you depends on your Type, your inner authority, your centres, your channels and your environment amongst many other things. If you want the full picture, that's what a proper look at your whole chart gives you.

What a 3/5 is Designed To Do

First of all, you're here to learn through experience. Hello, Line 3.

You're here to throw yourself at life. So many people stay in the cave because they don't want to be eaten by the saber-tooth tiger, which is a lovely way of saying they never leave their comfort zone. They're so frightened of making a mistake that they never really live.

You're the opposite. You look at life and think "right, I'm having all of it", so you go out there and collect the trials, the tribulations, the highs and the lows. And yes, you make mistakes along the way.

But mistakes are good. Failure is good. We need those challenges so we can alchemise them into something incredible, and that's exactly what you're here to do.

Then your Line 5 arrives and offers practical solutions to other people. You help them overcome their challenges, step into their leadership, find their visibility, whatever it is you teach. And guess what? You have all of that experience to draw from.

Learn it by living it, then offer the solution. That's your design, and it's a beautiful one.

The 3/5 Profile Blind Spot I See Constantly

When I first start working with 3/5 women, so many of them don't understand that dynamic at all.

Instead there's shame. Shame about the mistakes, and shame about the way people project onto them as a Line 5, because Line 5 carries a lot of expectation. "I disappoint people a lot" is something I hear from 5s over and over.

All of that comes into the business with them. They hold back, they stop being authentic, and they stop being themselves. So they walk onto a stage, or into a networking event, or they come and do a live video, and they play a role. They perform a persona, because somewhere along the line they were taught that's how you attract opportunities.

What it's really doing is stopping the most wonderful clients, partnerships and collaborations from coming anywhere near them.

And here's the biggest one. I see it all the time with 3/5 Profiles.

They hide their experience, because they think failure makes them less credible.

So let me ask you, as a 3/5. Come on, be honest with yourself, because this isn't about putting spiritual icing on everything and pretending you've reached the pinnacle. That's never going to happen! (We're human beings having a human experience, and we're constantly evolving). The moment you think you've made it and you close yourself off to learning, you shut down. So keep the channels open, and ask yourself honestly:

What parts of your experience are you hiding, particularly the failures, because you think they make you less credible?

Your Wisdom Includes What Didn't Work

As a 3/5 you're designed to experiment. Which means the wisdom you're here to share, the wisdom that genuinely draws your people in, isn't only what worked for you. It's also what didn't.

Very often my clients are a few years into their journey, sometimes many years. They're speaking on stages, leading communities, and they've built real success. And they carry this belief that they need to look polished and completely together for people to take them seriously.

So they develop an aura of perfection, and that aura makes them a little bit unattainable.

I always say that imperfection connects.

When you can talk about the messy moments, the lying on the bathroom floor snotty moments, the times your life felt like it was crashing down, the mistake that cost you one of your biggest clients, the launch that failed, something shifts in the room. That's powerful for anyone, and for a 3/5 it's extraordinary.

Because people hear it and think "oh my goodness, she isn't little miss perfect sitting up there on her throne. She's one of us. She actually understands what I'm going through, because she's been through it herself."

The Key To Sharing It Well

Now, the key to all storytelling, and I'd say this to anyone.

You share it from a place of transformation. You've healed the wound. You've overcome the challenge. You're not sharing it while you're still in the messiness of it.

Because how does that serve people? It might create some more views, and it won't truly serve your community.

The way you serve your community as a 3/5 is by speaking about your experiences from the other side. Not putting yourself on a pedestal, absolutely not, and really talking about the challenges.

I worked with a client who struggled with this enormously. She'd made some humdingers of mistakes in her life, and she never shared any of it, because she felt people wouldn't take her seriously or respect her. She came from a corporate background, and she said something to me I've never forgotten:

"When I was in corporate, if people saw a chink in your armour, they'd shoot the arrow."

If that's your background, or if you carry that same thinking, it's time to look at things differently. You're not working in corporate anymore. You have your own business, and you are the designer of it. People will relate to you the moment you start sharing the highs, the lows, the snotty bits, the scary bits, the things that went wrong and the things that went right, and how you alchemised all of it into something amazing.

My client dedicated herself to it, by the way, because she understood she had to do something differently to create more traction in her business. And it worked!

Why The Mess is Part Of The Design

One of the things Human Design teaches us, especially through the Kabbalah aspects, is that we're meant to go through these messy parts. All of us, not only 3/5s.

We need the rough times so we can alchemise them into something significant, because that's how we step through our fear. It's the hero's journey. You want your next level, you're scared of it, and you either stay in your comfort zone or you step out of it and face the fear.

And within your fear lies your gift. That gift is what you share with the world.

Everyone needs to learn how to do this, and as a 3/5 Profile you're designed to help people do it by sharing your stories and your wisdom. Your teachings help your clients and your community realise that their own lived experience, including all the messy bits, is their authority.

You show other people how to do that by doing it yourself.

Your Challenge This Week

So here's what I'd love from you.

Look at one of the messiest moments in your life. How it felt. What happened. Then what you did to overcome it, how you stepped into that fear, and what life looks like now on the other side.

Go and share it with your audience, because they're waiting to hear it from you. They want this from you. And as a 3/5 Profile, you're perfectly designed to give it to them.

Please don't let the thought that your failures make you less credible hold you back for another year.

Your failures make you very, very potent.
